Youth Power: The Heartbeat of The AbSTAR Youth Committee
Empowering youth to combat childhood cancer through community and compassion.
The Abbey Solo Foundation was established in November 2015 a month after Abbey’s passing. We were all very young at the time, but we were actively involved and participated in meetings and volunteered at various events like cooking the sausage sizzle at Bunnings. However, when questioned about our absence from the main committee as our names listed as committee members despite our unwavering support, this prompted the idea for AbSTAR Youth Committee. Gerard Broadfoot (President of the Abbey Solo foundation), put forward the idea of the committee to us kids and we knew this was an opportunity not to be missed.
The AbSTAR Youth Committee is comprised of children as young as 7yrs old and teenagers who are Abbey’s siblings and friends. We convene once a month to discuss strategies for fundraising and share our contributions towards supporting families affected by childhood cancer. Our initial 3 meetings were held virtually on zoom, but on the last Friday of the school holidays (7th July 2023), we had an opportunity to gather in Torquay. This invaluable experience allowed us to forge stronger connections and deepen our bonds with one another.
Each of us is driven by a profound passion to support Abbey’s vision of #givingtogetherness, drawing from our own personal experiences and witnessing Abbey’s journey firsthand. We are thrilled to be a part of this esteemed Youth Committee and encourage you to stay tuned for our upcoming events, “Please Support Us”.
